Keep on Truckin...

OK, folks...we've been on vacation for the past eight days or so. Please pardon our absence!

After our long drive across ND and MN, we opted for another long drive across WI and MI. We left Duluth a little late, but were very clean! Princess trimmed my beard, so now it's
shapely and I'm presentable, and then we wrestled for a bit (I won) before I had to jump in the pool to cool off. The mosquitos and humidity were quite intense - I haven't had both in a
long while. We headed east and crossed over the outlet waters of Lake Superior, immediately jumping into Wisconsin. Northern Wisconsin is much like Northern Minnesota (and most far
norths of the US) in that it's a lot of forested land, with the highway cutting a straight path through. Much of our road across WI followed the southeastern shore of Lake Superior, and
when we got to Ashland, we stopped for lunch at the South Shore Brewery in town. We did a little WiFi, chowed down on Whitefish sandwiches, fresh out of Lake Superior itself, and
then fell in love with the Irish Milk Stout. I pronounced that it was the best stout I had ever consumed, even better than Silverado Brewery's Oatmeal Stout. I was so much beside
myself at its awesomeness that I couldn't leave without it - and that's why H & P have their very own growler!

The rest of WI was pretty bleak, and by 7pm we were near Marquette, MI. An old wrestling buddy of mine from HS (Nathan Engel) is training for every major wrestling competition while
studying for his masters at the local university, so we stopped in for a plate of nachos for dinner and catch-up. Our stay was short, and then we continued east to Newberry for our next
KOA stop. The next morning we woke up at our normal time - back in Utah, that is. Michigan is on Eastern time, so we found ourselves an hour late to the world. We played a bit of
frisbee on the giant lawn, hopped in the indoor pool to test our head to head racing skills (Princess cleaned my clock) and jumped back on the road for our next MI adventure. I managed to stub my pinky toe on the edge of the pool while diving in, which is strictly forbidden, and now I have the feeling I broke it. It hurts when I push on it, so maybe it's just my finger that's broken.

After crossing over both Lake Ontario and Lake Michigan (at the same time!) we headed over to Cheboygan for another round of stake claiming. Princess had to have her picture taken in
front of the local firehouse, and then we were back on our way. Along the route south, P reccommended that we have our tires rotated after 4000 miles (what for?), so we stopped in
Grayling to have it checked out. The whole procedure took about a half hour, and we managed our time by riding around town on our bicycles. It was very warm that day, 94 degrees,
and everyone felt it. After paying our $15 for the rotation, we dove into the local 7-11 for some 28oz slurpees. So refreshing!

We pulled into the Emmett KOA a few hours later, and after setting up camp I cast my line into the local watering hole. This was my first opportunity to prove my man skills away from
the kitchen, but, unfortunately, I failed miserably. Princess came over after doing laundry, threw MY line out a couple times, and came back with an 8-inch largemouth bass. Three
nickels in one shot...so embarassing! The next morning was very eventful for us, for one because we would be venturing into Canada! The other, slight, not important at all event was me clumsily losing my wallet. After our camp was cleared out and packed up, I loaded my wallet onto (not into!) the car and drove off. I'm not sure where it left the comfort of the vehicle, but I didn't figure it out until we were 5 miles down the road. After two full vehicle searches and a return to the KOA, I was out $25 cash, a California Driver's License and an ATM card. No biggie, really. I had the ATM card cancelled within 15 minutes and a new license being sent out to Boston.

Canada!!

The border crossing was smooth and the roads clear. Across the way we spotted a giant anvil in the sky, looming and growing every second. We knew it was something intense, as we
found out before our KOA departure that a big wind storm was coming in. Fortunately for us, the only thing we saw was a two minute dribble of rain on the windshield and a splash of
traffic. Apparently, southeastern Ontario was hit with large quantities of rain, hail and thunder/lightning. We pulled into Toronto just after four in the afternoon and parked ourselves
underground at 44 Charles West. During our time as car jockeys for our close friend Claus, we met some very nice Canadians that invited us into their homes. Two of them were the
lovely Bruce & Sheila, and they happened to have a small clunker of an apartment in the ghetto, far from everything. I hope you all know me and my sarcasm, because none of that is
true. It's actually the exact opposite. We were very lucky to find ourselves in the center of town, with a nice place to stay AND free parking. It's friends like these that make you want
to open your heart and share the world.

We were met by Bruce & Sheila's daughter, Heather, at just after 5, and then headed down towards the water for some much needed cocktails and food. The Canyon Creek Chophouse
was running a Martini special for that day only, and we were so happy that we stayed for dinner! Heather's husband Matt showed up a little while later and our foursome started the
evening. It was steaks all around, and then a quick walk to Rogers Centre. The Cincinnati Reds were in town, so we dropped in to watch the Blue Jays take them on. We scalped some
great seats 16 rows up from 1st base for only $35 US each. I don't think I've ever seen a major league game from so close - it was amazing! Our night ended at the top of our building at
the Panorama bar...it faces all the lights of downtown!

The next morning...err, afternoon, Princess and I took to the streets for a full day without driving. The plan was to see the sights, shop for jeans and have fun. We walked down Yonge
St, stopping at all the shops with sales, hoping for the right deal. There were a bunch of people out that Friday, mostly because it was Gay Pride week and the big parade was the
following day. We had a blast trying on new jeans (nice ones!) but couldn't find anything that exactly tailored to our needs. Too small, too tight, too loose, wrong color...sometimes
you just can't win! We crisscrossed through the lower section of town, aiming for the CN tower. We passed through the Jazz festival, skipping the Robert Mondavi tasting and tiring our
feet along the way. We arrived at the tower, but were dismayed to find out it took an hour's wait to reach the overlook and another hour to get to the top. I found out that we could
skip the wait if we bought an entree each at the 360 Restaurant, and the next thing we knew, up we went! The elevator up is quite a thrill - if the ride were any longer my stomach
would have most definitely been in my throat!

We had dinner theatre at 4:30, with the entire city of Toronto playing the cast. The restaurant rotated 360 degrees every 72 minutes, and we were lazy enough to go around twice! We
both had the prix fixe - mango and crab salad, prosciutto and salami, smoked salmon, lobster fettuccini, peppered steak, strawberry shortcake and berry bramble crumble. Are you
drooling yet? We choked it all down with a 2005 Domaine Bossuet red Rhone...delish!

After dinner we took turns cheating death over the glass floor of the tower, laying out over nothing but thick glass and about 400m of air. Vertigo, anyone? We walked back to the suite
through the University of Toronto and out Victoria University. The campuses were very green and very gorgeous, and we nearly walked into a movie set! A superhero film was being
made in the center of U of T...it's so fun to watch people pretend! Our last stop was at the Royal Ontario Museum for a look at the Egyptian Book of the Dead and some artifacts from all
of the ancient cultures of the world. We were pretty pooped after that...seepy seepy.

Do you guys see why we can't blog everyday? Our days are just too jam-packed with stuff to do. Because I'm so nice, I'm gonna stop here for now. I promise to have another edition
up soon...try not to be too busy on the fourth so you can read it! Oh! By the way...my toe is much better. It only hurts when I try and yank it out of its socket!

Catch-up time at the OK Corral...

Much fun was had on our double date in Salt Lake City. Our hosts, Jon and Tara, took us to The Roof, an up-scale all-you-can-eat buffet. It is situated next door to the pokey building (aka The Temple). While we gorged on our delicious meal, we watched a Peregrine Falcon eat his dinner, of what I thot was dove, on the Temple! Cool! After dinner we rolled ourselves over to meet Evan (not Hollywood) and his Amish horse Ace. They took us on a carriage ride thru the city to Memorial Park, a lovely ride on a lovely evening.

The next morning we headed out for Yellowstone, via Montpelier, ID and Jackson, WY. I was delighted to find my long lost cousins at Bingham Cyclery (j/k) but they wouldn't give me the family discount! Lunch in Montpelier was at a greasy spoon, and dinner was at Osteria, a MOST DELICIOUS restaurant in Teton Village. Evan's friend Stacy manages it and took great care of us!

We arrived at our KOA in West Yellowstone late evening and set up camp. Come morning we grabbed our cameras and headed to the park. All of the wild thing sightings were exciting, and the hot springs and geysers were beautiful. Old Faithful did its thing- all the people downwind got drenched! And we all had the slight stench of hard boiled eggs by the end of the day!

Day 2 in Yellowstone was another day of observation, and by the time we exited the park, we had seen buffalo, elk, a black bear with twins, mule deer, a coyote hunting in a meadow, bald eagles, Pronghorn antelope, ducks, osprey, herons, geese, marmot, chipmonks/squirrels, really big ravens, magpies and many more... Even a golden-doodle! ;]

Our exit route was slowed by construction, but who's in a rush???

We arrived in Cody in time to set up camp, feed ourselves and hop the bus to the RODEO! oh boy! what fun! Had the best BBQ nachos I've ever tasted and a bud light! Yeehaw! The rodeo was entertaining, the clowns silly, the animals strong and athletic, and some riders even wore gawdy apparel! :]

Our bus ride back was prolonged by a forgotten family and a very unhappy baby ready for bed. It's amazing how such a little person can have such a BIG voice!
The following day we set course for Mount Rushmore. Our ride was sprinlked with many antelope, green rolling hills, steep cliffs of bland grey and vibrant rusts. I spotted a Golden Eagle soaring over a field, and we bought a bird book so I could be confident in my identifications!
We arrived at our KOA, pitched our tent, and joined the party heading to Mt. Rushmore to watch the evening lighting ceremony of the monument. While there we had ice cream, oohed and aahed, snapped just a few pictures ;], took a turn around the grounds and I blubbered while the park ranger told us of the massacre at Wounded Knee and when all of our military personnel were acknowledged. The lighting of the 4 presidents was a lovey end to a memorable visit!

All-you-can-eat pancake brekky is GREAT! Only $2.50 and I don't have to worry about feeding Evan for HOURS!!! :]

And here starts the long days in the car...Rapid City, SD to Bismarck, ND ohhhh about 7 hours driving, with a couple stops along the way: lunch and a quick donation at the Indian Casino! Once in Bismarck we made camp, supped (rib eye w/ zucchini), did a lil laundry and WATCHED TV on Hulu!! Burn Notice, not bad.

Hollywood & Princess Hit the Road...for real! Over June 22-24 we will be traversing 1200 miles over some pretty innocent land. North Dakota is nice, but there isn't much to pop out at you. Minnesota is just plum full of lakes (and turtles!) We will be touching Wisco, but not for very long (about 100 mi) before reaching Michigan. So far on this trip, we've accumulated 3500 miles and the Jeep just passed 120,000 mi for itself. Such wonderful milestones! (no pun intended)
When I set out to plan this adventure, I had a small idea of how the nights and mornings would go. Now, after more than two weeks of almost constant moving, I realize that there is no way to plan for a trip like this. We drive most of the day and arrive at our KOAs after 6, set up camp, eat, clean up and play games. We haven't done much sampling of our Orancello (maybe we're subliminally waiting for Sunapee) and haven't had the first opportunity to crack open our books. I brought Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, and Mom and Pop gave us a trio of mysteries and they all still lay untouched. Our mornings are strictly related to breaking camp, eating breakfast and hightailing it so that we don't get in too late to the next campsite.

We're hoping to buck the trend soon. Today, Princess & I went for a short morning jog, and then we bought Glenlivet 15yr old Scotch at Walmart in Jamestown, ND...maybe that lil bit of inspiration could wake us up!
Ciao fur now! H & P :]

To infinity and beyond...

This is us...hear us ROAR!

ok, so we (I) are new at this blogging thing... the address says Hollywood & Princess HIT the road...not something else ;]

wow, only a week has gone by and time has become unnecessary! im wearing a watch and don't know why... as it's time to get up when the sun rises and time to play as long as it's up, and bedtime is sometime after the stars shine...

I have found a very comfortable chair, in a lovely home in Mapleton, UT, belonging to Jonathan, Tara and the adorable Miss Savannah (who didn't want to go to bed).

I have seen many amazing features of God's green earth, and red, brown, cream, peach, salmon (Entrada Sandstone), seafoam green, violet...ya have to see it to believe it!

I even hugged a hoodoo!

Oreo's and chocolate milk have been consumed for lunch (and Artichoke tapenade for dessert), I'm on vacation...

Naps have been snuck, views have been inspiring, and many revelations have been, well, revealed.

The wild things are abundant: lizards, bears, buzzards, chipmonks, squirrels, elk, mule deer, marmots, even buffalo!

I should be getting fat, cause all I do is eat in the car...and we are on a roadtrip...

But I suppose all the hiking and biking and packing and unpacking of the car keeps me trim.

We have taken almost a zillion pictures, I'll be happy to share them upon request :]

Hanging out of the vehicle while taking pictures and off-roading has become a favorite pastime.

Doing both at the same time isn't recommended, but even more exhilarating!

Beautiful can't describe the vistas observed, each one is vastly different, amazing and unique.

Hollywood is getting fuzzy...somebody send a razor please ;]

I thought beauty wasn't skin deep...

I'm so glad Princess is having her eyes opened to the beautiful world in which we live. I had my eyes pried open two years ago on a similar trip, albeit much much shorter. Ironically, that trip was 1/4 the estimated time and 1/4 the estimated distance. Go figure!
These past two days have been wonderful, as I had never passed through Southern Utah before, and now I've seen five National Parks and/or Monuments in this one state alone. Shall I count the ways? Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Grand Staircase National Monument, Capitol Reef NP and Arches NP. Wowie Zowie!

Tonight and tomorrow our in-town rest nights, and then the vacation motor starts up again. First it's off to Yellowstone, then Cody, WY for a rodeo, then Devil's Tower, Mt Rushmore and Teddy Roosevelt NP in beautifully scenic and super important North Dakota. I have no idea what will take place from here on out, but I expect it will be wild and crazy and mostly contained.
Did we tell you that we only spent 1 hour out alone in Las Vegas and were in the hotel before 11pm? Are we getting old already?
This is me, and this is how we roll...
Don't forget to SMILE...H & P

Week 1 of the adventure...

We will let you decide who is who... ;]
The first week of our adventure is under our belts: we have conquered Half Dome in Yosemite, recovered for 2 days at Benton Hot Springs, baked overnight in Death Valley, and lived it up in Las Vegas. Ashi has headed home to AZ with Princess' rents, Zion was briefly investigated and we are now trying to snugg in for a cool nite in the KOA at Glendale, UT.
Besides the wonderful places we have visited, both Princess and myself are learning to be with each other in ways that we have not previously experienced. Don't get me wrong here...this is strictly professional. Some couples wait a long time to get to know each other's secret nuances - we're doing it in one big rush. We're doing our best not to argue, because it's really not necessary, but both of us know that our tempers have flared from time to time. I have gotten to know Princess in a whole new way, and I love her so much more for it.
Favorite parts of week 1: Summiting Half Dome before 10am (ahead of the masses), the first soak at Benton Hot Springs under snow-capped mountains, cycling down Route 6 at 4500 ft, watching the elevation go way up and waaaaayyy down (9945 to -282), Oh, I almost forgot: a wonderfully fabulous first (and most definitely not last) bottle of Chateau La Nerthe 2004...oh baby!!
And I don't know how Hollywood could forget dinner at the Eiffel Tower with my rents and watching the Cirque du Soleil show 'O'. Delicious food and wine, and a show that was beyond amazing, my jaw was dropped the ENTIRE time, everyone should go to Vegas to see that show!
My favorite parts of week 1: Waking up early naturally when camping, laughing at/with Hollywood, Ashi's squishy at seeing Mom and Dad, S'mores, hot water after a most challenging hike, the freedom of cycling almost vacant roads, an F-15 flyby and dogfight over Panamint Valley (oh boy!!!), the amazing diversity of the earth; the color, the texture, the temperature... oh and the bear in camp in Yosemite... and SLEEPING...
Least favorite parts... Having Half Dome almost cripple me ;] and the gawd awful traffic on The Strip in Vegas.
Ta for now, H & P :]
